Social Justice
Social justice is a major component of life at LCUUC. The Social Justice Committee offers LCUUC members and friends opportunities to apply their UU principles and beliefs in the larger community through education, direct service, advocacy for systemic change, and strategic distribution of our resources. We seek to cooperate and collaborate with other Unitarian Universalist and social justice organizations (faith-based and secular) in working together to promote peace, justice, and sustainability in our local and global communities. (THIS SHOULD ONLY BE ON THE SOCIAL JUSTICE COMM SITE)

Social justice is the lifeblood of our congregation. It nourishes us spiritually and enriches our community. We are committed to making a difference in our communities and in our world – to work to help our neighbors, to protect our environment, and for peace and justice.

Mission Statement:  The Social Justice Committee will provide social justice education and implement action focused on a specific issue identified by the congregation for a period of 1-3 years. Additional social justice topics may be identified and addressed at the committee's discretion.

The committee discusses current social justice topics and determines which topic they will focus on during the year. They determine what types of events they will promote and participate in. They also inform and encourage all LCUUC members to participate in those events by organizing one Sunday service at LCUUC each year and by keeping them aware of activities to participate in. The committee connects to and works on issues within the context of the larger UUA, the MidAmerica Region, and with allies in the community including other local Unitarian Universalist churches and social justice organizations to promote peace, justice, and sustainability. To find out more details on what the Social Justice group does, go to Social Justice at LCUUC.

The committee meets monthly, and sends monthly updates and an annual report to the appropriate Board liaison.

The committee also submits a budget request to the Finance Committee in April of each year.

Volunteer Tasks Include:
  • Attending and participating at the monthly committee meetings.
  • Attending outside-organization meetings and events.
  • Promote social justice awareness and encouragement to participate.
  • Planning and participating in special services.
  • Planning and participating in special events.
  • Planning for and hosting guest speakers.
  • Coordinating with other committees and the Office Administrator to reach committee goals.
  • Interacting with LCUUC members to answer questions.
  • Chairing the committee.

You are not required to be familiar with everything on the above list. As long as you are excited to learn something new and have the time to commit, we'd love to have you on the team!
